We use in our daily life a large number of substances such as lemon, tamarind, common salt, sugar, and vinegar. Many substances that we encounter in our daily life have different properties. One major difference between substances is whether they are acidic or basic.
A science activity was conducted by grade 7 students of Presidium wherein students conducted an Acid-Base test with natural indicators. A special type of substance was used to test whether a substance is acidic or basic. These substances are known as indicators. The indicators change their colour when added to a solution containing an acidic or a basic substance. Turmeric, litmus, China rose petals (Gudhal), etc. are some of the naturally occurring indicators. The objective was to inculcate a scientific attitude and research-mindedness through scientific investigations.
